Your 40's

Losing that glow?

As you approach and experience your 40's, you notice that your skin is changing, beginning to lose its youthful glow. Sun damage is typically the primary culprit for blotchiness, red spots and ruddiness. Collagen and elastin fibers begin to reduce at this age, and wrinkles and sagginess are starting to show.

You probably aren't going to completely give up the family beach vacation you take every summer, but it's never too late to start protecting your skin from the sun. Be sure to use a product that has an SPF of at least 15, although an SPF of 30 or higher is better. Use it every day – even in the winter. People often think that the damaging rays of the sun will not affect them unless they're lying on a beach or spending hours working outside. The sun's rays will find you, whenever you step outdoors.

As your body ages, your skin begins to lose collagen and elastin through a process called glycation (the destructive process of glucose molecules joining hemoglobin). Just like aging itself, it's a natural process. However, you can reduce the effects.

The best place to start is with your diet. Be certain you are eating as many all natural foods as possible and stay away from sugar. Both refined sugar and sugar substitutes are very stressful on your body because our systems weren't meant to absorb large amounts of it (natural or not). A helpful nutrient to your skin is vitamin C, as it is an antioxidant and aids collagen production. Taking a vitamin C supplement can help give your skin a brighter, healthier glow.

Getting plenty of sleep is very important, and you may be surprised to learn that the healthiest rest comes before midnight. You should also drink plenty of purified water and get regular exercise.
